Bodh Gaya or Bodhgaya is the location of Gautama Siddhartha's attainment of Enlightenment. The complex, about 60 miles from Patna in the state of Bihar in India, holds the Mahabodhi Temple with the diamond throne (called the Vajrasana) and the holy Bodhi tree. For Buddhists, this is one of four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.
Bodh Gaya, as of 2002, is an UNESCO World Heritage Site specifically nominated for the international World heritage program.
Bodhgaya is one of the sacred places for the Buddhists as well as for the Hindus.Where the quest of Prince Siddharth was fulfilled after years of seeking the truth and the saga of Buddha began.
The magnificent Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya is an architectural amalgamation of many centuries cultures and many heritages that came to pay their homage here.
Bodhgaya has naturally developed into the most sacred spot for Buddhists from all over the world, especially the affluent south East Asia.
The religious centre of Bodhgaya- and the axis mundi for Buddhism- is the Bodhi Tree, a fig tree descended from the original tree under which Lord Sakyamuni meditated and finally attained enlightenment, becoming the Buddha.
Bodhgaya is 100 km from Patna, the state capital of Bihar, and about 15 km from Gaya.
Bodhgaya offers a fairly extensive range of accommodation facilities which includes three star hotels, budget hotels, and a number of guesthouses and tourist bungalows.
