The Boise River is a tributary of the Snake River, approximately 75 mi (120 km) long, in southwestern Idaho in the United States.
It passes through downtown Boise, lined by an extensive recreational greenbelt, then flows northwest across the western end of the Snake River Plain, becoming a braided stream with a wide floodplain as it approaches the Snake.
The river is used for irrigation on the plain east of Boise.
A Greenbelt andPathways Committee was appointed in 1969 to guide the City of Boise as it workedto develop the Greenbelt, and in 1971 the first Greenbelt Ordinance was adoptedwhich required a minimum setback of 70 feet for all structures and parkingareas.
The City of Boise continued to slowly piece together a patchwork of landalong the corridor using several methods of acquisition including purchase,exchange, leasing and receiving donations of property by individuals, civicgroups and corporations.
The Boise Parks and Recreation Departmentprovides the staff to maintain the Greenbelt and is responsible for the designand construction of its improvements.
