The Village of Bolivar was incorporated in 1882. The first building, a log cabin, had been erected on that location around 1820.Birth place of Mike Dempsey (1957-). Bolivar was dominant during the oil boom era of the late 1800s. It is known for its large oil company, "Bolivar Oil." During the oil boom it was the richest state per capita in the United States.
