A nice town 145 KM north of Kolkata (Calcutta) and is best known for the proximity to Shantiniketan the university town set up by Rabindranath Tagore the nobel laureate poet. Set by the Ajay river it is part of the Birbhum district in the Indian State of West Bengal. It has a population of about 150,000 including Sriniketan, Shantiniketan and adjoining areas. Given its proximity to Shantiniketan and Sriniketan it is one of the seats of Culture and education in West Bengal.
It can become very hot in the summer months (April to July) in Bolpur and mild in Winter. Best time to visit is between November to February.
Communication: It is connected by trains from Calcutta on the Eastern Railway. Daily trains are available from the Howrah and Sealdah stations of Kolkata. It takes about 2 and half hours from Calcutta by most day trains. Its connected by road from Calcutta via the Panagarh bypass to Bolpur from NH-2. Regular buses are available from other cities like Bardhamman and Durgapur.
Places to stay: Bolpur has a number of 3 and 2 star hotels. Some of the notable budget hotels in and around the area are the Shantiniketan Lodge, Mark & Meadows, Chutti Lodge. Rates vary depending on the season and it is best to reserve if you are planning to visit during the tourist attraction of Poush Mela in December.

Bolpur is 99 miles from Howrah by road and 24 miles by train from Khana junction of the Eastern Railway.
Supur, the neighboring village of Bolpur has a temple of Surath- eshwar Siva, which is said to have been regularly worshipped by the legendary Surath Raja.
Only four miles to the north east of Bolpur at a village Shain there is a cold water spring known as Muni Kunda.
Direct rail link was established between Kolkata and Bolpur and the journey was reduced to 136 km.
Although real estate is booming, still the place is comfortably swathed in green and with not much auto mobile traffic (walking or cycling is the common mode of commuting), Shantiniketan offers a welcome weekend getaway, any time throughout the year and specially during its festive days.
Bolpur, 2km ahead of Shantiniketan, is the nearest town and railhead from Kolkata.
