Plot

Shekhar plays the rebel son of a Hindu family in a seaside village. He is studying journalism in Bombay and returns to his village. He falls in love with Shaila Bano (Koirala), a Muslim schoolgirl. He asks his hand but their fathers oppose their marriage. Swamy leaves for Bombay but continues writing letters to Shaila. Finally, Shaila escapes the village to marry him in Bombay. They have twins Kabir and Kemal and raise them in both religions. Meanwhile, in India, religious extremism launches each community against the other. In 1992, Hindus demolish the Babri mosque in Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh) where they claim there was a pre-Mughal Hindu temple. Muslims retaliate across India. While Shekhar interviews the political and policial leaders, the riots arrive to their neighborhood. Extremists try to burn the children but are stopped by Shekhar and the police. Alarmed by the Bombay news, their parents leave the village. After meeting their grandsons, however they forgive the couple and make peace with each other. A view of the Babri Mosque, pre-1992. ... The parallels of Victorian London from Dickens and the streets of Bombay are unmistakable.
There are movies, which tend to over-romanticize (eg: some of the ones directed by the Southie Priyadarshan) where you end up wondering whether the sea can be so blue or the sky at dusk so red.
Overall, the movie portrays some raw and harsh, but realistic images lifted out of the mean dog eats dog streets of Bombay.
