Bonthe District lies in the south of Sierra Leone. It borders the Atlantic Ocean in the west, Moyamba District to the northwest, Bo District to the southeast and Pujehun District to the south. It occupies a total space of 3,468 km² and comprises eleven chiefdoms. The main ethnic groups are Mende, Sherbro, Temne and Lokko. The main economic activities include fishing, rice growing and oil palm plantations. The district is predominantly Muslim.
