Boone County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 33,948. The county seat is Harrison. Boone County was formed on April 9, 1869 and was named for Daniel Boone.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,559 km˛ (602 mi˛). 1,531 km˛ (591 mi˛) of it is land and 28 km˛ (11 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.77% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,948 people, 13,851 households, and 9,861 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km˛ (57/mi˛). There are 15,426 housing units at an average density of 10/km˛ (26/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 97.60% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 13,851 households out of which 30.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 25.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.88.


In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 24.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.70 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $29,988, and the median income for a family is $34,974. Males have a median income of $27,114 versus $19,229 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,175. 14.80% of the population and 10.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.00% of those under the age of 18 and 12.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
