On 27 March 2007 Scottish Rugby Union announced the Reivers are to disband at the end of the current season as a cost cutting exercise [1]. Some claim that the Reivers suffer due to the SRU's determination, despite poor crowds and results, to make rugby a success in Glasgow (a city traditionally where Football has always been the most popular sport). Border Reivers were raiders along the Anglo-Scottish border (Border country), for nearly three hundred years from the late 13th century to the end of the 16th century, although their heyday was perhaps in the last hundred years of their existence.
Both Borders were divided into "Marches," under a "March Warden," and the respective kingdoms' March Wardens would meet at appointed times along the border itself to settle claims against people on their side of the border by people from the other kingdom.
The summer festival in the Borders town of Duns is headed by the "Reiver" and "Reiver's Lass", a young man and young woman elected from the inhabitants of the town and surrounding area.
