Encyclopedia > Borean languages

Borean languages is a hypothetical language family proposed by Sergei Starostin that would include most languages of Eurasia, North Africa, Southeast Asia, and some or all of the Americas. It is named after the Northern Hemisphere (Boreal). This is a smaller proposal than Proto-World, but larger than Nostratic or Eurasiatic. Most notably, Borean would include Sino-Caucasian and therefore the Chinese language, and Austric which encompasses the other languages of South China and Southeast Asia, neither of which have been included in any of the Nostratic or Eurasiatic proposals. Nikita Krougly takes credit for suggesting the name in 2000, while George Starostin expresses the reservation that the name would imply a prejudgement that the Eurasian macrofamilies Nostratic, Sino-Caucasian, Afroasiatic and Austric are more closely related to each other than to the African families Nilo-Saharan and Niger-Congo. Proto-World language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (785 words)
The term Proto-World language refers to the hypothetical, most recent common ancestor of all the world's languages – an ancient proto-language from which is derived all modern languages, all language families, and all dead languages known from the past 6,000 years of recorded history.
Many also question the underlying theory of monogenesis, the assumption that all known languages even do derive from a common ancestor, suggesting that language may have developed independently in different groups of early humans from proto-linguistic means of communication, thereby disputing the existence of Proto-World, or at least shifting focus to glottogonic issues.
The Russian linguist Nikolay Marr expounded a monogenetic theory of language that resolves all modern languages to four primordial exclamations.
