Encyclopedia > Boresight

Imagine you are standing upright on the ground. If you look straight ahead you are looking "along boresight". The boresight direction of an antenna is usually taken to be the direction along which the radiation is most highly concentrated. There can be, therefore, more than one boresight direction (eg, a vertically orientated half-wave dipole has uniform radiation in the azimuth plane, and any direction in this azimuth plane may be defined as boresight.) Imagine can mean several things: To imagine is to use the imagination to form a mental picture or image. ... In biology, antenna (plural: antennae) refers to the sensing organs of several arthropods. ... Radiation generally means the transmission of objects or information from a source into a surrounding medium or destination. ... A dipole ( Greek: dyo = two and polos = pivot) is a pair of electric charges or magnetic poles of equal magnitude but opposite polarity (opposite electronic charges), separated by some (usually small) distance. ... Azimuth is the horizontal component of a direction (compass direction), measured around the horizon from the North point, toward the East, i. ... Another analogy is to think of it as like firing a gun. When you sight up a gun, you line up the bore or barrel in the direction you want the bullet to go; hence, 'boresight'. The antenna engineers have borrowed the term: it's the direction of maximum radiation.

Boresight assembly - Patent 5486913 (3909 words)
A boresight assembly as recited in claim 3, wherein an outside diameter of said first cylindrical portion of said rod is substantially identical to an inside diameter of said bore of said weapon, to achieve a snug fit of said first cylindrical portion within said bore.
A boresight assembly as recited in claim 11, said adjusting means comprising screw means extending through a first side of said reflecting member in order to abut against a non-reflecting surface of said at least one panel, said non-reflecting surface of said at least one panel being opposite to said at least one reflecting surface.
The purpose of the dual reflecting structure is to allow boresight assembly 10 to be a self-testing unit for the perpendicularity of mirror panel 44 to axis 12 of rod 20 and, therefore, to bore 64 of weapon 60.
Hertz Data Acquisition Software Documentation (1505 words)
Three variables go into computing the "boresight" (position of a detector in the focal plane): X position within array, Y position within array, and instrument rotation (gamma).
Six constants are needed to describe the boresights for the entire array of detectors.
In the 'Boresight' window, there is an option to add 180 degrees to the parallactic angle before storing in the data files.
