Boronda is a census-designated place located in Monterey County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,325.


Geography

Boronda is located at 36°41'52" North, 121°40'16" West (36.697797, _121.671204)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,325 people, 309 households, and 269 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 897.5/km˛ (2,336.4/mi˛). There are 332 housing units at an average density of 224.9/km˛ (585.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 32.08% White, 1.74% Black or African American, 2.26% Native American, 9.74% Asian, 0.60% Pacific Islander, 44.08% from other races, and 9.51% from two or more races. 72.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 309 households out of which 53.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.8% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 12.9% are non-families. 9.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.27 and the average family size is 4.42.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 35.0% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 14.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 109.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.5 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $46,797, and the median income for a family is $43,309. Males have a median income of $26,089 versus $22,692 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $15,365. 10.9% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.6% of those under the age of 18 and 20.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The Boronda Adobe was built by José Eusebio Boronda between 1844 and 1848 in the grasslands of the lower Salinas Valley.
Boronda's Adobe differs from other adobes in its wood-shingled roof which slopes 4 ways (rather than red clay tiles), a wide, open veranda completely encircling the house, white-washed, open beamed ceilings and two indoor fireplaces with carved wood mantle pieces.
Boronda's original grant from the Mexican government was for 6,700 acres.
