Borrel II, count of Barcelona (947-992), under whose mandate the Hispanic March sufferred a terrible attack from Almanzor, who in 985 razed Barcelona. The petitions sent by the count to the king of France, at that time Lothaire, at Verdun were ignored. As a consequence of this, when Hugh Capet ascended the French throne, Borrel refused to pledge his fealty and the bond of vassalage between the March and France was broken. De facto independance had begun.
