Boscobel is a city located in Grant County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,047.

Geography

Boscobel is located at 43°8'11" North, 90°42'15" West (43.136473, -90.70418)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.4 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.72% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,047 people, 1,174 households, and 752 families residing in the city. The population density is 412.8/km² (1,068.6/mi²). There are 1,266 housing units at an average density of 171.5/km² (444.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.78% White, 3.74% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 1.18% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,174 households out of which 32.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 30.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.96.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.7 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $32,698, and the median income for a family is $37,527. Males have a median income of $24,806 versus $19,617 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,432. 9.6% of the population and 6.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Claims to fame

Despite its small size, Boscobel has two claims to fame: It is the birthplace of the Gideon Society (which places Bibles in hotels and motels throughout America), and it is also the site of Wisconsin's Supermax prison.

Boscobel, WI - On July 5, 2006 charges were filed with the Grant County District AttorneyÂ’s Office, charging Eric Hunt, a correctional officer at the Wisconsin Secure Program Facility, with the abuse or ill-treatment of Jorel Norwood, who is an inmate at the facility, stemming from an incident occurring June 1, 2006.
Steldt was treated at the scene by Boscobel EMS and was transported to the Grant County Jail.
Boscobel, WI - A Boscobel high school sophomore, an African American, was the unwelcome recipient of a racial slur from a Iowa Grant high school team member during homecoming activities.
