Bossier City is a city located in Bossier Parish, Louisiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 56,461.

Geography

Bossier City is located at 32°31'4" North, 93°41'29" West (32.517651, _93.691397)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 107.8 km˛ (41.6 mi˛). 105.8 km˛ (40.8 mi˛) of it is land and 2.0 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.90% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 56,461 people, 21,197 households, and 14,901 families residing in the city. The population density is 533.8/km˛ (1,382.6/mi˛). There are 23,026 housing units at an average density of 217.7/km˛ (563.9/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 71.44% White, 22.74% African American, 0.57% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, 1.44% from other races, and 1.97% from two or more races. 3.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 21,197 households out of which 36.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 15.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% are non-families. 24.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.09.


In the city the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $36,561, and the median income for a family is $42,642. Males have a median income of $30,632 versus $22,174 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,032. 14.8% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.


Other Notable Information

Bossier City is the location of Barksdale Air Force Base, home of the 2nd Bomb Wing, 8th Air Force, and 917th Wing. It was established February 2nd, 1933 and is one of the areas largest employers. Barksdale encompasses 22,000 acres and hosts the majority of the B-52 Stratofortresses used by the United States Air Force.
