Bostock on Plato's Soul (2006 words)
Bostock is not impressed, but makes the interesting observation that there is no reason why every soul cannot be purified and freed of the cycle of rebirth: then there would be no life as we know it.
Bostock notes that the soul rules desires, not the body itself, and concludes that Plato is relying on the connection between the body and desires in turn.
Bostock points out that the argument does not work: granting that the soul cannot both exist and be not alive does not mean that it cannot cease to exist.
