Encyclopedia > Boston Camera

The Boston Camera was a special reconnaissance camera that was used in a B-36 and later a C-97 for testing purposes. The camera which was carried on the first RB-36D (44-92088) had a 240" focal lenght lense. Althought the camera was not really 20 feet long, it used a series of lenses to achieve the 240" length. The lense had a f8 stop and used a 1/400 shutter speed. The camera used 18x36 inch negatives. Reportedly the camera could take a picture of a golf ball form 45,000 feet. After about a year of testing the camera was transferred to a C-97, the camera was never used operationally and was given to the Air Force museum in 1964.
