In 1985 Laurie Smith of the West Australian Museum published a paper (Smith 1985), dividing what was formerly regarded as a single species, the Children's Python Bothrochilus childreni into three geographically exclusive species.
Although there is debate as to the validity of this division (see later), I will for the time being treat these snakes as three similar but separate species.
