The first recorded mention of the distillery was in 1779, the first on Islay, but it is believed to have started soon after David’s arrival in 1766. He was a pioneer - he built the distillery, distilled the whisky and introduced the new famous Islay whisky to the world. The distillery was later taken over by James Mutter and his family. James Mutter considerably expanded the distillery and as the Bowmore name began to travel, demand grew. The family kept the distillery until 1887 when it was sold to John Sherriff of Campbeltown and became the Bowmore Distillery Company. In 1963 the distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison. Although Morrison substantially rebuilt and renovated much of the distillery he retained the original floor maltings and traditional Single Malt Whisky production methods which are still in use to this day. Bowmore Single Malt Scotch has won more awards in major international competitions than any other single malt scotch. Some of those are:

Varieties Bowmore is known for producing a wide variety of whiskies of different ages and finishes. While this practice may be considered a marketing ploy rather than an effective technique for improving quality, it has enabled the company to offer an eclectic range of taste and price. Bowmore whisky is milder than the three southern distilleries but has distinct peaty and salty flavours. The taste and location fit perfectly together. Both in the middle of the Souther and Northern distilleries. As with all distilleries, the range of bottlings available constantly changes according to availability and marketing decisions. As of September 2006, the primary range comprises: - Bowmore Legend: (now discontinued) Their least expensive bottling. No age is printed but it is an 8 - 10 year old malt. 40% alcohol by volume.
- Bowmore Surf: Same as the Legend, for the European market.
- Bowmore Enigma: a 12 year old whisky. 40% abv.
- Bowmore 12 Year Old: A standard Islay whisky. 40% abv.
- Bowmore 15 year old ("Mariner"): A slightly older variety. 43% abv.
- Bowmore Darkest: As the name suggests, their darkest whisky. Aged 12 years in ex-bourbon casks and finished for an additional 2 years in Oloroso butts. 43% abv.
- Bowmore Dawn: Aged in ex-bourbon and finished in Ruby Port casks. One of their strongest varieties: 51.5% abv. No age given.
- Bowmore Dusk: Aged 12 years in ex-bourbon and finished in Bordeaux red wine casks. 50% abv.
- Bowmore 17 Year Old: The next stage above the 15 year old Mariner. 43% abv.
- Bowmore 25 Year Old: Their oldest commonly available bottling. 43% abv.
- Bowmore Cask Strength: Bottled straight from the cask. 56% abv.
