Much of what was printed was traditional or at least anonymous, but there has been some comment that on occasion 'Bowyang' was not always the best at crediting the authors of poems, verse and songs.
In part, it is because of this that we have no record as to whether ballads like 'The Stockman's Last Bed', 'The Freehold On The Plain' or 'The Flash Stockman' for example were traditional or composed, but author unknown.
'Bowyang' was also criticised for not paying any money to the people who had sent him material, especially the actual writers of songs and verse, but then Vennard was quick to point out, on any number of occasions, that there was no money in writing.
