Morehead was born on 24 August 1843 in Sydney, New South Wales, and educated at Sydney Grammar School. He arrived in Queensland in 1866 as a Station Inspector for Australian Investments Company. In 1871 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly as member for the Mitchell District and became Postmaster General in 1880 in the first McIlwraith government. He was leader of the opposition from 1883 and joined the second McIlwraith government in 1888 as colonial secretary. He became premier when McIlwraith resigned in November.
He died on 30 October 1905.
