History
Boys' Latin was founded in 1844 by Dr. Evert Marsh Topping, a former Classics professor from Princeton University. The school was located in downtown Baltimore (on Brevard Street) until the late 1950s, when its site was selected as part of a city-sponsored urban renewal project. In 1960 the school relocated to its present 41-acre campus spanning West Lake Avenue, on the border between Baltimore City and Baltimore County. REDIRECT Baltimore,_Maryland ...

Academics Boys’ Latin’s faculty has an average of 13 years’ teaching experience, with 60% holding post-baccalaureate degrees. A student-faculty ratio of 8:1 means classes permit extensive personal interaction between teacher and student. In addition, every student in the Middle and Upper Schools is assigned a faculty advisor who guides and mentors his academic, social, and moral development. Lower School begins with Kindergarten. Along with homeroom classes in Reading, the language arts, social sciences, and Math, boys have classes with a variety of teachers to begin their education in Music, Art, Spanish, technology, and Physical Education. The Middle School offers traditional classes such as Algebra, life sciences, and English, as well as classes in personal skills such as decision making, research, independent reading and even desktop publishing. Students begin formal daily study of a foreign language in the seventh grade with Latin, and in the eighth grade may elect to continue with Latin, or study Spanish or French. The eighth grade also presents an opportunity for students to develop public speaking skills, with a formally-prepared speech as part of the curriculum. Because Boys’ Latin is a college-preparatory school, required Upper School coursework includes English, Math, History, Science, and foreign languages, to ensure that students are thoroughly prepared for college and later life. For a well-rounded education, students are also required to take courses in computer applications, Physical Education and Health, and the fine arts. A wide variety of electives is also available, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in nine subjects including Calculus, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, U.S. History, and English Literature. The Williams Scholars Program (named for inspirational former headmaster Jack Williams) offers incentive for academic achievement, including a stipend for summer educational programs. In addition to academic subjects, there are many opportunities in the fine and performing arts, from painting to music composition to the production of music videos. Individual instrumental music lessons are available in all grades, and music and art shows throughout the year showcase student achievements. The Upper School presents drama productions in the winter and spring, and each year a senior is chosen to direct the spring production. After working through a multiple-draft writing process and attending seminars on presentation skills, all seniors deliver speeches to the entire Upper School. Finally, there is a wealth of club and other extra-curricular activities, from chess to digital photography to student newspaper publications, for all students to investigate, develop and express their personal interests.
Athletics Boys' Latin's sports teams are known as the Lakers, and participate in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA). Boys' Latin is particularly known for its lacrosse program; the Lakers play in the MIAA "A" Conference, one of the most competitive high school lacrosse leagues in the nation, and are consistently one of the top teams in the league, sending many players to play in college at all levels. In 2006, the Lakers completed an undefeated 21-0 championship season and were named the co-#1 high school lacrosse team in the United States[1][2], an honor the school also accomplished in 1997, 1988, and 1985.
