Bozeman is a city located in Gallatin County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 27,509. It is the county seat of Gallatin County6.


Geography

Bozeman is located at 45°40'40" North, 111°2'50" West (45.677890, _111.047274)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.6 km˛ (12.6 mi˛). 32.6 km˛ (12.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,509 people, 10,877 households, and 5,014 families residing in the city. The population density is 843.0/km˛ (2,183.8/mi˛). There are 11,577 housing units at an average density of 354.8/km˛ (919.0/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 94.73% White, 0.33% African American, 1.24% Native American, 1.62% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.47% from two or more races. 1.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 10,877 households out of which 22.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.0% are married couples living together, 7.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.9% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the city the population is spread out with 16.0% under the age of 18, 33.0% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 14.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 111.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.6 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $32,156, and the median income for a family is $41,723. Males have a median income of $28,794 versus $20,743 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,104. 20.2% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

With a 2000 population of 27,509, Bozeman is the fifth largest city in the state.
In 1863, John Bozeman, along with a partner named John Jacobs, opened the Bozeman Trail, an offshoot from the Oregon Trail leading to the mining town of Virginia City through the Gallatin Valley and the future location of the city of Bozeman.
John Bozeman, with Daniel Rouse and William Bealle platted the town in 1864 stating "standing right in the gate of the mountains ready to swallow up all tenderfeet that would reach the territory from the east, with their golden fleeces to be taken care of...".
