The saddleback toads are very small frogs, mostly around 1 centimetre in length, and include the smallest frog in the Southern Hemisphere, Izecksohn's Toad (Brachycephalus didactylus). They have only three toes on each foot, and two fingers on each hand. This is in contrast to the usual five toes and four fingers of most frogs. The Southern Hemisphere is the half of a planets surface (or celestial sphere) that is south of the equator (the word hemisphere literally means half ball). On Earth it contains five continents (Antarctica, Australia, most of South America, parts of Africa and Asia) as well as four oceans (South...

The saddleback toads are diurnal, and habit leaf litter on forest floors. The eggs undergo direct development, in which they bypass the tadpole stage. The eggs are laid on the ground, and covered in soil to protect from the heat and predators. Their amplexus method is unusual, in that it begins with the inguinal amplexus, which involves the male holding the female around the waste, and then shifts to axillary amplexus, in which the male grips above the females arms. Most frogs species will only use one technique. Amplexus is the process when the male frog grasps the female while she lays her eggs. ...

The “Saddle-back” or “pumpkin toads,” as they are known due to the presence of bony shields above their vertebrae and the bright orange coloration of some of the members of this family.
At first they were considered to be Bufonids, but an absence of a Bidder’s organ (ovarian tissue on the testes, a synapomorphy of Bufonidae) led to their recognition as an independent family.
Brachycephalus ephippium is known to possess tetradotoxin, a strong toxin also found in newts of the genus Taricha and in puffer fish.
