Bradford is a town located in Merrimack County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,454.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 93.3 km² (36.0 mi²). 91.5 km² (35.3 mi²) of it is land and 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.94% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,454 people, 559 households, and 403 families residing in the town. The population density is 15.9/km² (41.2/mi²). There are 762 housing units at an average density of 8.3/km² (21.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.25% White, 0.28% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.72% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 559 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% are married couples living together, 11.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.9% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 2.96.


In the town the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.1 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $49,018, and the median income for a family is $57,083. Males have a median income of $34,803 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the town is $22,240. 4.1% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Originally granted as New Bradford in 1771, the town was later called Bradfordton, then finally Bradford upon incorporation in 1787.
The highest point in Bradford is an unnamed 2,096-foot (639 meter) summit overlooking Ayers Pond on the town's western border.

The 2004 Census estimate for Bradford was 1,513 residents, which ranked 158th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
