Bradford is a census-designated place and village located in the town of Westerly in Washington County, Rhode Island. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,497.


Geography

Bradford is located at 41°24'2" North, 71°44'51" West (41.400657, -71.747607)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛). 4.9 km˛ (1.9 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,497 people, 482 households, and 397 families residing in the village. The population density is 307.4/km˛ (795.0/mi˛). There are 496 housing units at an average density of 101.9/km˛ (263.4/mi˛). The racial makeup of the village is 96.33% White, 0.67% African American, 0.73% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. 1.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 482 households out of which 51.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.6% are non-families. 13.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.10 and the average family size is 3.39.


In the village the population is spread out with 35.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 15.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.3 males.


The median income for a household in the village is $42,130, and the median income for a family is $40,370. Males have a median income of $36,250 versus $24,353 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,004. 13.1% of the population and 12.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.4% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
