Bradley is a census-designated place located in Greenwood County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 171.


Geography

Bradley is located at 34°2'50" North, 82°14'36" West (34.047152, _82.243369)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 20.3 km˛ (7.8 mi˛). 20.3 km˛ (7.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 171 people, 66 households, and 47 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 8.4/km˛ (21.8/mi˛). There are 82 housing units at an average density of 4.0/km˛ (10.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 57.89% White, 40.94% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 66 households out of which 33.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% are married couples living together, 10.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 21.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 3.5% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,542, and the median income for a family is $45,000. Males have a median income of $21,875 versus $26,786 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $15,225. 9.7% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 100.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Patrick Henry Bradley (1813-1887), colonel and later general (1842) in the state militia, was the son of John K. Bradley (1785-1861) and his wife, Mary Kidd.
During the Civil War, he was captain of Co. C, Seventh South Carolina Volunteers for a year, served two terms in the state legislature (1862-1863, 1864-1865), and after the war was instrumental in the construction of a railroad from Greenwood to Augusta.
Bradley was given specific directions about the responsibilities of certain slaves-"Make George hunt them [the hogs] up & mark all the pigs & keep them from running off." A few lines at the end of the letter conveyed the news from the front.
