Braeswood Place is a mainly single-family neighborhood inside the 610 Loop, east of the city of Bellaire, south of the cities of Southside Place and West University Place, west of the Texas Medical Center and the neighborhood of Old Braeswood, and north of the Brays Bayou and the neighborhoods of Linkwood and Knollwood Village. Braeswood Place was built during the 1950s.[1] Interstate 610 is a freeway that forms a loop around the city of Houston, Texas. ... Braeswood Place once had the Link Valley Apartments, which was seen as a haven of crime. The Apartments were demolished, and a community center was built in its place. The community center consists of the McGovern-Stella Link Branch of the Houston Public Library, the Weekley Family YMCA, a field for the West University Little League, and an Alzheimer's treatment center. Next door are two Houston Independent School District schools, Mark Twain Elementary School and Pershing Middle School. The original Mark Twain campus, which was built in the 1950s, was demolished to make way for a brand new campus scheduled to open in 2005. Pershing Middle School is also slated to be demolished, with a replacement campus scheduled to open in 2007. The Rice School, a magnet public school, is located in the eastern part of Braeswood Place. Houston Public Library is the public library system serving Houston, Texas. ... The neighborhood was devastated by Tropical Storm Allison in 2001 [2]. Before Allison, the neighborhood mostly consisted of 1950's style ranch homes. After the flood, many of the ranch homes were demolished and replaced with two-story Colonial, Tudor, and Stucco houses with high foundations. Many upper middle class families moved into the newly-built houses. Parts south of the bayou (including Braes Terrace) are zoned to Longfellow Elementary. All parts of Braeswood Place are zoned to Pershing Middle. Pupils east of Stella Link (including Braes Heights) are zoned to Lamar High School in Upper Kirby while students west of Stella Link (including Ayrshire and Braes Terrace) are zoned to Bellaire High School.
