Braham: Pie Capital of Minnesota

Braham is the homemade pie capital of Minnesota. Every year on the first Friday in August the people of Braham celebrate Pie Day. This celebration includes craft sales, music, food stands, games, and entertainment, not to mention pie.


Braham was declared the Pie Capital of Minnesota by former Governor Rudy Perpich in 1990. Braham became famous for its pie in the 1930s and 1940s when Minnesotans would take the "shortcut to Duluth through Braham." While taking this "shortcut," people would stop in Braham and visit the "Park Cafe," the cafe which made Braham famous for pie. Pie Day began in July of 1990, after Independence Day, as an ice cream social for fund raising and other charitable activities. In 1992, the date was changed to the first Friday in August when the Isanti County Historical Society took charge of the event. Former Basketball Champions

Braham's local basketball team, the "Bombers", was noted for its domination of the basketball court, winning three straight class "AA" state championships. Their coach, Robert Vaughan, led the Bombers to all three of their State Championships, and is a teacher at Braham Area High School. Their star players included brothers Noah Dahlman, the career rebound leader in the state of Minnesota, who currently plays for the Wofford Terriers; Isaiah Dahlman, the career scoring leader in the state of Minnesota, who currently plays for the Michigan State Spartans; and Josh Vaughan who currently plays for the North Dakota State University Bison. Welcome to Braham Pie Day! (230 words)
Braham was named the "Homemade Pie Capital of Minnesota" by Gov. Rudy Perpich in 1990.
Our fame for pie began in the 1930s and 40s when folks would drive to their lake homes, taking the "shortcut to Duluth through Braham." After driving from the Twin Cities they would stop at the Park Cafe for pie and coffee.
In 2001, the event drew over 5,000 people to town and enlisted 150 volunteers to bake and serve 525 baked fruit pies.
