The Brahman breed of cattle originated from the Bos indicus cattle originally brought to the US from India and Brazil. The principal breed was the Kankrej, called Guzerat in Brazil. Also used were the Nelore or Ongole and the Gir or Gyr. The Brahman is a beef breed, it has been crossbred extensively with Bos taurus (European) beef breeds of cattle. The Brahman and cattle carrying percentages of Brahman breeding have been found extremely useful in the southern coastal area of the United States, where they have demonstrated their ability to withstand hot and humid weather and to resist insects.
Probably the greatest tribute to the Brahman breed and its breeders is the rapid growth of the breed outside of the United States.

The concept and formulation of modern breeds of cattle began in the midregions of England, in northern Europe, and on the Channel Islands during the mid-1800s, and most modern breeds were formed in the latter half of that century.
Cattle with similar characteristics, however, were present in these areas even before the concept of breeds became dominant.
