"Brain Stew / Jaded" is the third single from Green Day's 1995 album Insomniac. It was released in 1996. On MTV and radio airplay the song is merged into the next track, "Jaded", and the combination of the two became an alternative-rock radio staple. Brain Stew was likely too abrasive for mainstream audiences, and Jaded too short and insubstantial. The song(s) was accompanied by a visually striking video which received heavy airplay on MTV. The first half reflected the jarring and abrasive Brain Stew with the band being shunted around a building site, and the second half showcased the fast-paced and more fun Jaded with the band playing in a basement.


Later on in their career, Green Day intended to release a similar double-single from their album American Idiot, which would have been titled Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, but scrapped the idea soon after. Both of these tracks became separate hits. The double-single idea remains as an example of Green Day experimenting beyond the stereotype of modern punk music.
