Braintree is a local government district in the English county of Essex. Its main town is Braintree.


The district was formed on April 1, 1974 by the merger of the urban districts of Braintree and Brocking, Halstead, and Witham and Braintree Rural District and Halstead Rural District.

Braintree is a town of about 30,000 people in the county of Essex, in the south east of England.
Braintree is twinned with the French town of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine.
Essex is rather flat on the whole, and the Braintree area is no exception; however, there is a general downward trend in the height of the ground from the northwest towards the coast to the southeast.
