With the Mariners the next year, Morrow surprised many by not giving up a run for much of spring training, and turning in an overall very strong performance that earned him a bullpen spot on the opening day roster for the start of the next season. Brandon Morrow has a 93-98 mph fastball with two complementary pitches (slider & splitter). He registered a 2.25 ERA and 9.6 strikeouts per game at two levels last summer.
Performance during the 2007 season
Brandon Morrow has in the last few games of April twice come in during high pressure situations and delivered stellar performances. In the April 29th game against the Kansas City Royals he came in with 1 out and runners on second and third base and struck out both batters he faced. This was the second game this week in which he used his overpowering fastball to get out of a 1 out, RISP jam. In both cases he had inherited the runners. There is concern amongst certain fans (especially at the Lookout Landing blog) that his performances as a clutch reliever will stereotype him as a reliever and prevent him from getting the opportunity to develop into a #2 or #3 starter in Seattle's SP rotation.
