Breakdown Voltage (Insulator) = The minimum voltage that makes an insulator react as a conductor. Nonconductors or electrical insulators are materials which lack movable electric charges, and which therefore lack a low-resistance path for charge flow. ... In science and engineering, conductors are materials that contain movable charges of electricity. ...

Breakdown Voltage (diode) = The minimum reverse voltage to make the diode conduct in reverse. Types of diodes In electronics, a diode is a component that restricts the direction of movement of charge carriers. ...

Breakdown Voltage (Insulator)

Is a parameter of an insulator that defines the maximum voltage difference that can be applied across the material before the insulator collapses and conducts. This may create a weak point in the insulator from a molecular change created by the current flow. Nonconductors or electrical insulators are materials which lack movable electric charges, and which therefore lack a low-resistance path for charge flow. ... A parameter is a measurement or value on which something else depends. ... // Definition An Insulator is a material or object which resists the flow of electric charge. ... International danger high voltage symbol. ... In electricity, current is the rate of flow of charges, usually through a metal wire or some other electrical conductor. ...

Two different breakdown voltage measurements of a material are the AC and impulse breakdown voltages. The AC voltage is the line frequency of the mains (either 50 or 60 Hz depending on where you live). The impulse breakdown voltage is simulating lightning strikes, and uses a 1.2 microsecond rise for the wave to reach 90% amplitude then drops back down to 50% amplitude after 50 microseconds.

Two technical standards governing performing these tests are ASTM D1816 and ASTM D3300 published by ASTM.

Breakdown Voltage (diode)

Is a parameter of a diode that defines the largest reverse voltage potential that can be applied without causing an exponential increase in the current in the diode. As long as the current is limited, exceeding the breakdown voltage of a diode does no harm to the diode. In fact, Zener diodes are essentially just heavily doped normal diodes that exploit the breakdown voltage of a diode to provide regulation of voltage levels. Types of diodes In electronics, a diode is a component that restricts the direction of movement of charge carriers. ... A parameter is a measurement or value on which something else depends. ... Types of diodes In electronics, a diode is a component that restricts the direction of movement of charge carriers. ... International danger high voltage symbol. ... In semiconductor production, doping refers to the process of intentionally introducing impurities into an extremely pure (also referred to as intrinsic) semiconductor in order to change its electrical properties. ...

High Voltage Breakdown Tester (2790 words)
The basic idea of a breakdown voltage tester is to apply current limited high voltage to an insulator, and raise the voltage until the desired voltage test level is reached, or until a small amount (1 to 2 micro Amps) of leakage current flows.
The light bulb in the primary of the high voltage transformer is an old but good method of limiting the current to the transformer primary in the event of a major component failure.
Since high voltages are involved, it's necessary to build this tester with plenty of open space between components and wiring.
breakdown (831 words)
Breakdown is characterized by the rapid increase of the current under reverse bias.
The breakdown voltage is a key parameter of high power devices but also for logic devices as one typically reduces the device dimensions without reducing the applied voltages, thereby increasing the internal electric field.
Avalanche breakdown is caused by impact ionization of electron-hole pairs by carriers that have gained energy by accelerating in the high electric field in the depletion region of a reversed biased p-n diode.
