History

The name Breakwater came from a rock ford constructed across the Barwon River by Geelong's first Police magistrate, Captain Foster Fyans, in 1837. The ford stopped the inflow of salt water to the fresh water river, and supplying the town with fresh river water. Although the breakwater is a marine sanctuary, line fishing is allowed; be alert for fishing gear on the bottom and overzealous boaters.

Caution must be exercised when entering from the breakwater due to the barnacles and concrete blocks obscured by bull kelp.
