Breckenridge Hills is a city located in St. Louis County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,817.


Geography

Breckenridge Hills is located at 38°42'56" North, 90°22'9" West (38.715687, _90.369078)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 km˛ (0.8 mi˛). 2.1 km˛ (0.8 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,817 people, 1,999 households, and 1,211 families residing in the city. The population density is 2,268.1/km˛ (5,890.1/mi˛). There are 2,173 housing units at an average density of 1,023.2/km˛ (2,657.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 65.89% White, 28.81% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.12% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. 3.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,999 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.4% are married couples living together, 22.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 31.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the city the population is spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $34,671, and the median income for a family is $41,515. Males have a median income of $27,487 versus $22,743 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,847. 17.3% of the population and 15.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The history of Breckenridge Hills is basically a story of the land and the people who have settled her over the years.
For example, the land on which the Breckenridge home was erected, was officailly granted by the U.S. Government to Noel Honore with James McDonald, as an associate and overseer of the property, in 1803, after the Louisiana Purchase.
Sarah Quinn who owned land east of Asa Breckenridge, which sometime between 1878 and 1909 was transferred to the Boswell family, and the Humes, who property was to the west of Hyatt's land.
