History Of Bredbury

Bredbury's history is one of some confusion. Originally farm land bought by Lord Danton back in 1014, the process of inhabiting Bredbury began. Mentioned briefly in the Doomsday book as being several hundred acres of land and the only occupants listed was duck and a sheep, its value was placed at three pounds. There is no mention of Lord Dantons manor. Bredbury remained a quaint hamlet upon till the industrial revolution took place. Stockport became a focal point for the hat industry. Although in a strong religeous area, anybody who worked at "La Sein" was outcasted and classed as a heathen. Modern history, Bredbury has thrown the shackles of the industrial mill into the Goyt, and moved into 21st Century. 12% of the local businesses are now powered by green fuel. A scheme developed by the local council to clean the air of Bredbury.

There is no confusion as to the early history of Bredbury as it appears in the Domesday census of 1086. The 'lord' of Bredbury was the pre-conquest Anglo-saxon Thane, Wulfric. The history of Bredbury may stretch back into pre-Roman times when it belonged to the lands of the Brigantes where evidence of celtic habitation has been found along the Goyt valley. In Roman times it lay on the route between the forts of Mamucium (Machester) and Ardotalia (Melandra castle, Longworth).
