Goddard was raised in Traralgon, Victoria, and later attended Caulfield Grammar School as a boarder. Goddard was an accomplished sportsman, co-captaining the school's First XVIII football team and co-captaining the First XI cricket team as a powerful batsman and pace bowler. He was selected by the St Kilda Football Club with the first pick in the 2002 AFL Draft after Carlton lost its draft picks due to salary cap violations. The Blues had previously declared an intention to draft Goddard with the first pick in the draft. Goddard debuted for St Kilda in the 2003 season while completing his VCE as a Year 12 student at Caulfield Grammar. While he has been criticised for his slow development at AFL level, Goddard has played over 50 games at AFL level and is seen as a player set for a long AFL career. In the middle of 2006, Brendon was the focus of a cult following, known as MWL or the Milky White Legs. This followed his 90 metre torpedo goal against Fremantle in round 20 where his roosting 'long bombs'(kicks) have made him renowned as having one of the biggest kicks in the AFL.
