Bret Harte is a census-designated place located in Stanislaus County, California. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 5,161.


Geography

Bret Harte is located at 37°36'11" North, 121°0'21" West (37.603182, -121.005844)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.5 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,161 people, 1,174 households, and 1,013 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 3,558.3/km˛ (9,183.3/mi˛). There are 1,250 housing units at an average density of 861.8/km˛ (2,224.2/mi˛). The racial makeup of the CDP is 40.34% White, 1.14% African American, 1.92% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 50.71% from other races, and 5.25% from two or more races. 76.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,174 households out of which 54.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% are married couples living together, 17.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.7% are non-families. 9.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.40 and the average family size is 4.59.


In the CDP the population is spread out with 38.3% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 14.1% from 45 to 64, and 6.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 24 years. For every 100 females there are 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.3 males.


The median income for a household in the CDP is $26,568, and the median income for a family is $27,155. Males have a median income of $27,591 versus $17,885 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $7,481. 38.1% of the population and 30.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.7% of those under the age of 18 and 18.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Born in Albany, New York, he moved to California in 1854, later working there in a number of positions, including miner, teacher, messenger, and journalist.
When word of Dickens's death reached Bret Harte in July of 1870, he immediately sent a dispatch across the bay to San Francisco to hold back the forthcoming publication of his Overland Monthly for twenty-four hours.
