The Bretons are a distinct celtic ethnic group located in the region of Brittany in France. They are primarily descended from groups of Brythonic celts who settled the area from Cornwall and England in the 4th-6th centuries. The region of Brittany is named after them and they mainly speak Brezhoneg, a Brythonic language closely related to Welsh and Cornish. The language has no offical status under French law, however, the majority of Bretons use it as an every-day language and bilingual road signs are common in the west of Brittany. The Breton people are predominantly Roman Catholic and Brittany is one of the most staunchly Catholic regions in all of France.
