Encyclopedia > Brett Angell

Brett Angell (born August 20, 1968) is the youth and reserve coach at Portsmouth Football Club, having retired from playing in 2004. Previously he played primarily with Stockport County and Southend United. He also had a torrid spell in the Premiership with Everton during the 1990's, but was then transferred to Sunderland and later back to Stockport County. His most successful season was 1996-97, when he was Stockport's leading goalscorer and inspired them to promotion to Division One as well as reaching the League Cup semi finals. He later revived some of this success at Walsall where he picked up a Division Two Play-off winners medal in the 2000-01 season. His employemt as a coach at Portsmouth takes his career full circle, having been a striker with the youth team in 1986-87. ToffeeWeb - Everton Past Players: Brett Angell (466 words)
Brett, to be fair, also had no support, but his attempt to beat 3 Liverpool defenders with his subtle touch and flair was memorable.
He was awful for the entire game, and then in the 89th minute he swivelled and half-volleyed the ball from all of 30 yards and it was heading straight for the bottom corner until the 'keeper saved.
I only saw Brett on a handful of occasions and don't remember much beyond the fact that he was tall and rather lumbering.

Indeed, one goal in his 20 appearances tells the story of a frustrating fourteen-month spell at Goodison Park.
Joe Royle sold Angell to Sunderland for £600,000 in March 1995 and although Angell struggled to make an impact at Roker Park, he went on to forge a successful career in the lower divisions.
His 17-year, sixteen-club career has seen him score 163 goals in 398 starts - a fine return for any striker, but now for the first time since turning professional in 1986, Angell finds himself without a club after being released by QPR in May 2003.
