Dorey started his cricketing career playing for the Western Australian Under-17 and Under-19 sides. He later backpacked around Europe for two and half years. During this time he had an injury while snowboarding which nearly ruined his career. He moved to England, where he served as a bodyguard for the child of a Russian businessman.
