Early history

The two Midwesterners crossed paths numerous times at coffeehouse gigs before settling in the Los Angeles to write together producing their first two albums Down In L.A. and Weeds. Brewer and Shipley's management hooked the duo up with Gravenites, who'd already made a name for himself as a member of the Electric Flag, as well as writing songs recorded by the likes of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
Brewer and Shipley learned it off an FM station beaming out of Little Rock, Arkansas, as "while we were traveling all over the heartland late at night, that would be one of the only things we could get on the radio.
Brewer and Shipley would go on to record five more albums in the 1970s before splitting at the end of the decade, although they reunited in 1986 and returned to recording in the 1990s, continuing to play live today (check their website, www.brewerandshipley.com, for details on their current activities).
