Secretary of the all-party horticulture and gardening group BrianDonohoe MP says safety in gardens is under threat after DTI minister Patricia Hewitt’s decision to end collection of home and garden accident statistics due to budget cuts.
Donohoe said: “The minister has replied saying the DTI has no plans to reverse this policy, nor does it have any plans to establish a new government accident recording system to ensure and improve the safety standards of home and leisure products and activities.
Donohoe said he is now writing to the Department of Health to see if it is planning to launch any initiatives to strengthen the surveillance of accidental injury.
