Brian Dubie's previous political experience before running for Lieutenant Governor was serving on a Burlington, Vermont area school board. He won the 2002 elections due in part to a split liberal vote between Democrat Peter Shumlin and strong third-party candidate Anthony Pollina), he was easily re-elected along with incumbent governor Jim Douglas in the 2004 elections. Though he is known for his laid-back approach to campaigning and is neither extremely popular nor extremely unpopular, he has won a measure of respect from both sides of the aisle due to his initiatives to open increased trade between Vermont and various unlikely foreign trading partners, most notably Cuba. In 2005, a trade commission headed by Dubie agreed to sell cows, milk, and apples to the country in spite of the decades-old U.S trade embargo against Fidel Castro's government.
