Encyclopedia > Brian Kernighan

Brian Wilson Kernighan (IPA pronunciation: ['kɛrnɪˌhæn], the 'g' is silent), (born 1942 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) is a computer scientist who worked at Bell Labs alongside Unix creators Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie and contributed greatly to Unix and its school of thought. He is also coauthor of the AWK and AMPL programming languages. Not to be confused with the NATO phonetic alphabet, which has also informally been called the “International Phonetic Alphabet”. For information on how to read IPA transcriptions of English words, see IPA chart for English. ... 1942 (MCMXLII) was a common year starting on Thursday (the link is to a full 1942 calendar). ... Kernighan's name became widely known through co-authorship of the first book on the C programming language with Dennis Ritchie. Kernighan has said that he had no part in the design of the C language ('it's entirely Dennis Ritchie's work'). He authored many Unix programs, including ditroff. C is a general-purpose, procedural, imperative computer programming language developed in 1972 by Dennis Ritchie at the Bell Telephone Laboratories for use with the Unix operating system. ... In collaboration with Shen Lin he devised well-known heuristics for two NP-complete optimization problems: graph partitioning and the travelling salesman problem. (In a display of authorial equity, the former is usually called the Kernighan-Lin algorithm, while the latter is styled Lin-Kernighan.) In complexity theory, the NP-complete problems are the most difficult problems in NP, in the sense that they are the ones most likely not to be in P. The reason is that if you could find a way to solve an NP-complete problem quickly, then you could use... If a salesman starts at point A, and if the distances between any two points is known, what is the shortest round-trip the salesman can make which will visit all points once and return to point A? The travelling salesman problem[1] [2](TSP) is a problem in discrete... In optimization, the Lin-Kernighan algorithm is one of the best heuristics for the Euclidean traveling salesman problem. ... In optimization, the Lin-Kernighan algorithm is one of the best heuristics for the Euclidean traveling salesman problem. ...

Kernighan was also software editor for Prentice-Hall International. His Software Tools series spread the essence of 'C/Unix thinking' with makeovers for BASIC, FORTRAN, and Pascal - and most notably his 'Ratfor' (rational FORTRAN) was put in the public domain.

He has said that if stranded on an island with only one programming language it would have to be C.

The 'K' of K&R C and the 'K' in AWK stand for 'Kernighan'. The C Programming Language, second edition, by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, widely regarded to be the authoritative reference on C. He has on occasion revealed it was his own pun which led to the use of the name 'Unix' (initially 'Unics') for the operating system Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie were working on.
