Kerr joined Motherwell from Newcastle United in the summer of 2004, knocking back offers from German giants Borussia Dortmund to join his home town team. However, having been with the club for less than a month, his career took a setback when he suffered cruciate ligament damage in a pre-season friendly with St Mirren, leaving him out of football for eight months. Since recovering from his injury, Kerr re-established his place in Motherwell's first-team squad, he scored his first goal for the club, as well as the club's first goal of season 2005-06 with a spectacular strike in a 4-4 draw with Celtic.
