Character and Relationship with Family Members
Brian is the eldest child and only son of Bill and Judy Miller. At the end of the series, he was a college-bound high school graduate and presumably 18 by the fourth and final season. Brian's character is depicted as a stereotypical nerd, sans the glasses. He is a gifted student (as well as his high school's valedictorian) with a penchant for learning, astronomy, role-playing games, and theatre, among others. Though he is an intelligent student, like many other storybook nerds he has a poor social life and is neither interested nor adept in sports. His love life is healthy enough for a boy his age, however: he once had a casual girlfriend named Bonnie (Ashley Tisdale) who ultimately dumped him for a jock, and even lost his virginity to a girl he met while on an exchange trip to Italy. âNerdsâ redirects here. ...

Surprisingly enough, his own family does not take pride in his accomplishments. His parents, Bill and Judy, as well as his sister Lauren value fun and friendship more than learning and academics and are thus often unable to relate to Brian on a personal level. There are hints throughout the latter part of the series that not only does his family not take pride in his accomplishments, they probably even regard Brian as the black sheep of their family. In fact, Bill has expressed disappointment in his son on more than one occasion, sometimes even in front of Brian himself. Black Sheep may refer to many different things: // English language Black sheep is a derogatory colloquial term in the English language meaning an outsider or one who is different in a way which others disapprove of. ...
In the last two seasons, particularly in the final one, he is usually ignored or neglected by his parents. In one particular episode, Brian wins a chess tournament and Bill forgets to come to his ceremony and induct him as the champion. In another, Bill and Judy tear up their son's autographed Weird Al tickets as part of an elaborate plot against their friends and Brian takes revenge by informing the victims of his parents' scheme. In still another episode, Bill and Judy are more than willing to take the money out of Brian's own college fund for Lauren's party, which Bill ultimately spends on lunch with his mother's new husband, Johnny. Later in the same episode, Judy writes Brian a bad check to his college of choice and does not seem to care when Brian relays this news to her. The latter is then forced to go to the L-station to breakdance for tips to compensate for the $100. Though decidedly a goody-goody, there is a wilder side to Brian. As shown throughout the series it appears he is not averse to drinking, smoking or even premarital sex, as he has done all three. On a Christmas episode he, along with Lauren, even once talked his way out of going to his grandparents' for Christmas by lying about having a job in order to stay home and have fun for the duration of the visit.
Sexual Orientation The question of Brian's sexual orientation is probably one of the longest running gags of the show. Although Brian appears to be heterosexual, his nerdiness and interest in the feminine aesthetic have cause his family to make cracks about his alleged homosexuality. Throughout the series Brian has been known to read Vogue, twirl a baton, and join the cheerleading squad (the last of which ultimately being revealed as his way to meet cute girls). In one episode, Brian imitates the traffic signals and gestures his mother makes after Judy teaches her to drive. In another, he is singled out as "gay" after his uncle Perry comes to Chicago with flowers for his aunt Linda, as he is the only one in the room who knew that the flowers Perry brought were carnations, as well as knowing that said species of flower would probably not help Perry in his attempt to get Linda back. Another episode features Scotty Fitzsimmons, the son of Bill's friend Fitz, asking Brian on (as Brian put it) "a boy-on-boy gay date". It should be noted, however, that jokes regarding his orientation increased during the fourth season. During the season pilot, after learning that the girl Brian hooked up with in Italy was only using him, Bill and Judy speculated that news of this would devastate their son and possibly even lessen his interest in women dramatically. The fact that Brian was not seen with another girl or at least trying to meet one for the entire duration of the season probably confirmed this, thus giving his family more reason to question his sexuality more. |
