Undrafted to the NHL, Pothier was signed as a free agent by the Atlanta Thrashers during the 1999-2000 season, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He moved to the Senators before the 2002-2003 season in a trade for Shawn McEachern, and was later signed by the Washington Capitals as a free agent in the summer of 2006.
