Encyclopedia > Bridegroom
A groom waits for his bride.
A groom waits for his bride.
A groom caught in a candid moment before the wedding.

A bridegroom (often shortened to groom) is a man who is about to be married, or who has just been married. A groom is defined as a personal hand servant much like a valet. Therefore the "Bride's Groom" is correctly defined as the bride's personal hand servant. He is typically attended by a best man and groomsmen. His partner, if female, is known as the bride, who is typically attended by one or more bridesmaids and a maid or matron of honor. The groom will after that ceremony be called a husband of his new spouse. The term "groom" has the Indogermanic root of "earth" (for "ghmún"), which evolved into Latin humanus and Germanic and English "man" and "groom". In western cultures, the groom usually wears a dark coloured suit or tuxedo during the wedding ceremony. At the end of the wedding, it is the groom's priviledge to remove the bride's garter and toss it over his shoulder to the group of male guests (if a garter is not worn, a stocking is removed instead), much like the "tossing of the bouquet" performed by the bride. It is traditional belief that whomever catches the garter will be the next to be married. Image File history File links This is a lossless scalable vector image. ... It is a world both exotic and disarmingly familiar, one in which Chinese men and women meet with small epiphanies and muted triumphs, leavening their lives of quiet desperation through subtle insubordination and sometimes crafty resolve.
Reversals, transformations, and surprises abound in these assured stories, as Ha Jin seizes on the possibility that things might not be as they seem.
