Bridgewater is a town located in Rockingham County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,203.


Geography

Bridgewater is located at 38°23'12" North, 78°58'11" West (38.386748, -78.969678)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.2 km˛ (2.4 mi˛). 6.2 km˛ (2.4 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,203 people, 1,788 households, and 1,201 families residing in the town. The population density is 837.0/km˛ (2,169.2/mi˛). There are 1,850 housing units at an average density of 297.6/km˛ (771.3/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 95.18% White, 2.48% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 3.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,788 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 29.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the town the population is spread out with 18.9% under the age of 18, 21.9% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.0 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $41,038, and the median income for a family is $49,777. Males have a median income of $35,579 versus $25,255 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,215. 5.3% of the population and 3.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 0.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
